« The city that never sleeps », as Liza Minelli, Frank Sinatra and so many others have sung, never leaves anyone indifferent. Gigantic and hyperactive, rectangular and vertical, the symbol of America’s “melting pot” is at the crossroads of all of the world’s cultures. New York, a world of its own concentrated into one city is familiar to people the world over thanks to its constant media presence. Who nowadays, doesn’t know Times Square with its giant neon signs, or Broadway or Central Park, Manhattan’s huge green area and the scene or numerous films and television series?
But aside from these postcard images, the numerous neighborhoods and boroughs that make up New York each have strong and distinct identities of their own. Brooklyn for example, has artist quarters and immigrant areas. Greenwich Village, or “The Village” is, as its name implies a veritable village and a Bohemian quarter with small characteristic buildings. Chinatown, Little Italy, etc. are all part of this unique city which should be explored on foot in order to fully grasp its immense size and its incredible diversity.
TheLangham Place Fifth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan, is ideally located on the legendary and chic 5th Avenue, not far from the theatres, Madison Square Garden, the Empire StateBuilding and just three blocks from Grand Central Station. This mythical thoroughfare runs from the north to south for about 11 kilometers, including the length of Central Park and the most luxurious residential quarter of the city.
The elegant, classic style 60 story skyscraper in which the hotel is situated is the work of architect Charles Gathmey. This pure style tower blends in perfectly with its prestigious neighbors. The elegance of the interior matches the impressive silhouette of the building, combining refinement and sobriety in a filtered atmosphere.
The serene ambiance is in direct contrast with the frenetic activity of the city. In the lobby, a superb statue by Spanish artist, Santiago stands proudly near the reception area. Each room is tastefully decorated using precious materials including rosewood and Italian walnut for the window and door frames and the parquet floors, leather for the bed heads, Calacatta marble for the bathrooms and a restful cream color, all created by Italian craftsmen.
Considering that space is one of the most precious commodities in a city like New York, the Langham Place’s 214 rooms and suites are among the most spacious in the city with a surface of 100 square meters for the suites. An ingenious system of screens open onto the bathroom space and increases even more the impression of space. Most of the immense and luminous rooms have magnificent views of the city.
The space dedicated to well-being is also gigantic, taking up the entire 4th floor. The Auriga Spa proposes unique treatments that can be taken individually or as a couple. Bubble baths, a hammam and a sauna are part of a long list of wellness activities offered. In addition, the hair salon is directed by Julien Farel, one of the four most famous hair stylists in the city.
Anyone staying in New York for a few days must absolutely reserve one evening for dining at the hotel. Under the leadership of the talented Chef, Michael White, the Ai Fiori, earned its first Michelin Guide star the year it opened. The menu features delicious Mediterranean cuisine with pasta, al dente of course, risotto, shellfish and the specialty, “lamb chops en crepinette.”
Visitors frequent the Bar On Fifth tohear a jazz group perform in a soft and sophisticated atmosphere in the company of native New Yorkers for an authentic Big Apple experience.
