Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean with several islands, the most important of which is Madeira Island itself. Discovered in the 15th century, it is a favorite European tourist destination for many reasons. First of all, its climate is as pleasant and clement as one could possibly hope for. Temperatures are mild and the sun shines almost all year round. In addition, the island’s landscapes are superb, with green mountains and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. To truly discover Madeira, it’s essential to visit its magnificent gardens and admire the incredible flora which has made the island the pearl of the Atlantic. Thanks to its pleasant climate, we can observe mimosas, bougainvilleas as well as camellias, which adorn the small narrow streets of cities like Funchal. The island’s main city is very popular with tourists thanks to its wide range of accommodations and the authentic local charm of this small port town. The fish market is a must with its variety of fresh fish including the traditional bacalhao and cod as well as espada, a long, flat black fish which can be eaten grilled, breaded or poached in a wine sauce.
The five-star Choupana Hills Resort & Spa is on the Atlantic Ocean island of Madeira. Nestled on a superb hill overlooking the Bay of Funchal, the hotel offers guests a calm, luxury retreat in the heart of beautiful and abundant vegetation.
The complex has two main buildings. The first contains the reception area and an attractive library, and the other, the restaurant and bar. The rooms are below in thirty or so red tiled pavilions with colorful walls. The Choupana Hills has 56 forty square meter Deluxe rooms, with a bed in the center, a living room space and a separate bathroom. Each room has a large veranda with a view of either the garden or the ocean. There are two family pavilions with a space reserved for children and another for adults. Finally, there are four particularly spacious suites providing flawless comfort and privacy, and a 30 square meter veranda with a private Jacuzzi. The décor of all the rooms has been very carefully laid out so that guests feel at ease as soon as they arrive. One could qualify the space as “refined design”, and each room is embellished with exotic wood furniture.
At the Choupana Hills, guests can choose between two heated swimming pools, the 250 square meter outdoor pool with a view of the Bay of Funchal, and the indoor pool, part of the superb Elemis Spa, which offers a wide range of regenerating and relaxing treatments and massages.
Meals are served at the Xopana, the hotel’s gastronomic restaurant, in the form of a buffet for breakfast and a full a la carte menu for dinner. It’s the perfect occasion to discover, in a particularly elegant dining room, the traditional and modernized cuisine of the Chef, a former student of Alain Ducasse. Just above, we find the Basalt Bar which serves cocktails and snacks of all kinds for a relaxed moment among friends or a romantic moment watching the sunset.
