In 1882, more than a century before the banks of the Seine in Paris were transformed into an urban summer beach known as “Paris Plage”, Le Touquet in the Northern Pas-de-Calais region of France was already known as Le Touquet-Paris-Plage. Located on the Opal coast, near the Belgian border, facing the southeastern cliffs of England, Le Touquet is one northern France’s most famous beach resorts. Thanks to the numerous activities it offers visitors and its dynamic character, this charming city has been given several nicknames, like for example, the “Four Seasons resort”, because of the variety of events organized throughout the year. It is also called a “Paradise for sports” as a result of its land, sea and beach sport activities. But Le Touquet is also an exceptional site in terms of architecture. As a proud representative of the Anglo-Norman style, it has no less than 21 officially classified historic monuments and about a hundred buildings listed as worthy of interest, most of which are magnificent villas.
The last of the northern palaces
Built in 1924 to replace a casino, the Westminster is an integral part Le Touquet’s history. This 4 star palace and a northern French icon, with an elegance of typical of 1920s and 30s buildings, perpetuates the tradition of “grand hotels”, in which the materials used for construction are as renowned as the guests who have stayed here, like Winston Churchill, Marlene Dietrich, Charlotte Rampling, Jacques Chirac and Tony Blair to mention just a few. The pure Anglo-Norman style of the white brick and stone façade immediately sets the tone. Inside, we discover a spacious hall, with shades of gray, wood carving and iron work adding to the retro 1930s charm of the hotel. The 115 rooms and suites maintain this same impression. Recently renovated by the designer couple, Christine and Nicola Borella, they elegantly reflect a “jazz age” atmosphere while at the same time providing modern comfort. The rooms also reflect the soul of Le Touquet through three sports oriented themes: polo, sailing and golf. The furniture and the cupboards of all the rooms were created by the Leleu House, adding a lovely modern touch to the retro chic effect. The hotel has a Michelin Guide starred gastronomic restaurant, the Pavillon, directed Chef William Elliott, who proposes a simple, delicate and inspired cuisine using well known local products. As the chef himself says: “The simplicity of good cuisine means respecting the tastes and the quality of the products.”
The Westminster’s Nuxe spa offers an impressive range of treatments and a heated indoor swimming pool with decorative frescoes. It’s also possible to take advantage of the one of the region’s most beautiful golf courses, located in the midst of forests and sand dunes; an exceptional site which attracts golfers from all over the world.
One of the celebrities who stayed here, Sean Connery, signed his contract to play in the first James Bond film at the Westminster!
