Pafos

Cyprus, the island of love that Homer sang the praises of in an ode to the goddess Aphrodite, has only recently begun welcoming visitors who come to enjoy the beauty of its scenery and its archaeological treasures that bear witness to a civilization that goes back nine thousand years. Since joining the European community in 2004, the island has gradually opened its doors to mass tourism. Its long stretches of beach, its warm sunny climate and the wealth of its archaeological heritage have made Cyprus an extremely popular destination. Thanks to this recent economic boom, new upscale hotels have been built for the most part on its eastern coast. The western region, around Pafos, remains relatively wild and preserved, offering visitors a discreet, refuge far from the bustling city.

A unique family holiday experience

The Hotel Almyra with its immaculately white, almost dazzling facades, its gentle ocean water atmosphere and the aroma of lavender guiding the visitors along the paths of the property all combine to create an environment that is totally unique on the site of Pafos. After two years of complete renovation, the hotel reopened in March 2003 on the foundations of the former Pafos Beach Hotel, the first hotel built on the sea front, in 1972. The innovative concept of the Almyra, a member of the Thanos Hotel group, was to create a family resort. The idea was developed by Thanos Michaelides after observing the lack of facilities for couples accompanied by their children. “An innovation which characterizes the Almyra’s spirit is that it’s the first design hotel on Cyprus. We created something that didn’t exist.” Responding to the demands of family needs without renouncing the design effect, was quite a challenge. The hotel underwent a chic metamorphosis under the leadership of stylist Joëlle Plélot, a former collaborator of Karl Lagerfeld. The 189 rooms are spacious, with elegant interiors. Glass partitions and tiled floors create an atmosphere of serenity. Almyra is more than just a luxury hotel in that it is designed to receive families that want an unusual, enriching family vacation experience. Adults as well as children can find what they’re looking for. The Almyra Spa offers guests a moment of total relaxation while the children take advantage of the swimming pool which is specifically designed for their favorite games.

“I wanted to optimize the location of the hotel so that guests could live to the rhythm of the sea at any hour of day or night. We stripped the hotel as much as possible in order to expose the sublime sixty year old concrete structure and filled it with made to measure design furniture combined with older pieces restored by Cypriot craftsmen.” (Joëlle Pléot, in charge of decoration)
