Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, attracts millions of visitors every year who come to discover a European capital on a human scale, where it’s easy to get around or even to get lost, since they can count on the traditional hospitality of the local inhabitants to find their way. It was here that the young girl and her family hid from the Germans beginning in 1942 until her arrest and deportation to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died. The diary she kept and which was recovered in the hideout was published after the war and remains a poignant testimony of the period in which she lived and of her own budding adolescence.

In the evening, visitors head for the two major nightlife areas, the Rembrandtplein and the Leidesplein, with their bars, terraces, restaurant and trendy night clubs. For cinema lovers, a visit to the Art Déco cinema, the Tuschinski, is strongly recommended for its magnificent dome and its numerous stained glass window, making it on of the most beautiful movie theatres in the world.

A peaceful hotel

Ideally situated on a quiet street near the Rijksmuseum and numerous boutiques, the Hotel Vondel offers its guest a warm welcome in a very pleasant design atmosphere. From the outside, the building that houses this four-star hotel seems to be very simple with its traditional orange bricks, but as is often the case in Amsterdam, it’s inside that the true image of the building appears. A wide variety of accommodations are available to guests, ranging from rooms designed for brief individual business trips, to large rooms for big families. There are single and double rooms, suites, apartments and lofts. In each case, one finds elegance and simplicity thanks to large beds, the size depending on the category of room chosen, bathrooms in the center of the main room or showers with big shower heads and flat screen television. The largest rooms and suites have an office and a living room space. The apartments and lofts have a fully equipped kitchen as well. Luxury here is functional, discreet and thoroughly modern.

The hotel’s restaurant is called the Joost Eat & Drink, in reference to the well known writer and poet, Joost van den Vondel, who is considered to be the Dutch Shakespeare. Lunch consists of delicious club sandwiches, and the dinner menu highlights international cuisine with some local specialties in a cozy atmosphere where guests can admire contemporary works of art by the popular artist, Peter Keizer. There is also a very pleasant bar which is especially popular with the inhabitants of Amsterdam.
