Bonifacio

Just opposite nearby Sardinia in Italy, Bonifacio, the southernmost French city, on the island of Corsica, is a bit like the end of the world especially for those living in France. With its famous limestone cliffs, its marina and its history, Bonifacio is a land of centuries old legends. The great plague of 1526, the constant sieges, especially that of Dragut the Pirate and the dramatic sinking of the Sémillante in 1855 are but a few events that have shaped Bonifacio’s thousand year history.

Everything here is instilled with history and nature, the two elements often inextricably linked, like for example the celebrated stairway of the King of Aragon with its 189 steps carved directly out of the rock in just one night. The work was reportedly carried out by the Aragonian king’s troops in 1420 during the siege of Bonifacio. Another version of history however, claims that it was built by Franciscan monks over a longer period of time. It doesn’t really matter since Corsica is the land of both legend and beauty where fantasy and dreams play a major role!
