Vienna, formerly an imperial city and the historical birthplace of European arts in the 18th and 19th century, has conserved the vestiges of the period when Austria dominated the cultural and artistic life of the European continent. Built on the remains of the fortifications circling the historical part of the city and classified a world heritage by UNESCO, the Ringstrasse, is rich in centuries old Baroque and Renaissance facades going back to the powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire which disappeared with the end of the First World War. The Opera, an emblematic building created by architects Auguste Siccard Von Siccarsburg and Eduart Van der Null and opened on May 25th, 1869, continues to be a major landmark thanks to the quality of its musical representations and for the hosting of its prestigious annual ball. Imperial Vienna was shaped by culture and the arts which can still be enjoyed in the museum neighborhood and especially the Museumsquartier, a complex built in the 1990s on the site of the former imperial stables.
The Museumsquartier is a cultural space dedicated to modern and contemporary art dominated by MUMOK, the Vienna Museum of Modern Art whose structure combines the forms of an anthracite colored cube and an early 20th century clinic which has become a boutique hotel, a remarkable example of modern Viennese architecture. The purist décor is devoid of all ornamentation, considered too false. The glass, marble, chrome and dark wood of the interiors pay tribute to artistic principles initiated by the Bauhaus, the Institute of Arts and Trades founded in 1919 in Weimar. The design of the Levante Parliament Hotel is minimalist and aerial. Light, transparency, space and curved lines are at the heart of this concept created by its team of architects. With, as background, an art gallery in the form of a permanent exhibition, the all glass restaurant-bar space, the original creation of artist Ioan Nembol, has become one of the most popular meeting places in the city, frequented by the Viennese upper class. The refined menu is an elegant blend of oriental and European cuisine.
Glass works of art by specialist Ioan Nemtol and the photographs of Austrian, Curt Themessi, can be purchased by guests of the hotel if they so desire.
