Megève, which means, « in the middle of the waters”, a reference to its geographical situation between the Arbon and the Arly rivers, is ideally located facing the Mont Blanc massif.
Created in 1912 by Baroness de Rothschild to compete with the Swiss resort of St-Moritz, Megève became THEchic ski station where the world’s VIPs would come together. The village however, has preserved its identity and its rich heritage, including magnificent monuments like the Saint John the Baptist church whose oldest parts date back to the 13th century.
On the more modern level, exceptional boutiques featuring the world’s greatest fashion designers and jewellers welcome visitors. In short, authentic chalets, traditional washhouses, numerous chapels and oratories are adjacent to luxury boutiques and equally luxurious and discreet hotels.
An ultra chic boarding house
On the heights of Megève, at an altitude of 1300 meters nestled above the commune of Rochebrune, we find Les Flocons de Sel, in the heart of a superb contemporary hamlet, entirely conceived by the starred Chef Emmanuel Renaut and his wife, Kristine. Facing the Aravis massif, this five star establishment proposes 6 warm and pure style rooms with wood burning stoves and fireplaces, in its beautiful light colored wood chalets. 2 totally private chalets, or mazots, were created as well. All the structures combine functionality and design in a warm and cozy atmosphere.
Kristine and Emmanuel Renaut designed the salons and each of the rooms, and selected the objects for the decor with the goal of welcoming guests their into their own home. The contemporary style dominates in a barely suggested mountain ambiance.
Each room is different and develops its own universe although they all have in common, blond wood, granite, space, king size beds facing the fireplace and large bay windows opening onto the mountain. The 2mazots, the name once given to the outbuildings, are small, 2 story private chalets. Separated from the other chalets, they are veritable cocoons of peace and serenity. Everything here is designed for the guests’ maximum comfort, including an excellent spa with treatments reflecting the mountain spirit.
In this luxurious boarding house, guests are welcomed of course, by the master of the house, before entering his kitchen, since Emmanuel is above all, a Chef. He in fact, describes the Flocons de Sel as a restaurant with rooms and a family home where the welcome is warm and friendly. Trained in Paris by Christian Constant, Emmanuel teamed up with Marc Veyrat before opening his own Michelin starred restaurant. The rooms came afterwards. His cuisine bears the mark of all great Chefs: simplicity in appearance but the highest quality technique and a menu that varies with the seasons. His cuisine highlights the products of his beloved mountain. Specialties include « pigeon fermier rôti foin et genièvre et sa pâte de noisettes » (roast farm bred pigeon and juniper berries with hazel nut paste) or « l’Omble Chevalier juste cuit “(Arctic charr fish), dishes which can be enjoyed while comfortably installed at one’s table, facing the mountains surrounding Megève.
In this exceptional site, a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux, the mountain is omnipresent, and the master of the house is constantly helping us to discover it.
