The Portuguese Madeira archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean consists of several islands, the largest and most important of which is Madeira Island itself. Its popularity with tourists the world over is due to many reasons, including its very pleasant year round climate, its diverse and superb landscapes between the mountains and the ocean and its magnificent and abundant flora. In the south of the island, we find Funchal, Madeira’s main city, a pleasant site well worth the visit. In addition to its superb gardens and wine cellars, tourists can visit a cathedral built between 1493 and 1514, famous for its beautiful cedar wood ceiling. A few steps a way, we discover the flower market, which is popular with visitors because of the warm welcome provided by the flower sellers dressed in traditional costumes. The Lavradores market is an ideal place to observe daily life in a colorful marketplace with stalls overflowing with fruits and vegetables.
About 30 kilometers from Funchal, Ponta do Sol, or Point of the Sun in Portuguese, is a small equally popular town whose name comes from the simple fact that it’s the sunniest spot on the island. It’s this advantage that convinced hotel professionals to build here. And it’s here that we find the celebrated Estalagem da Ponta do Sol hotel.
The famous four-star Estalagem da Ponta do Sol hotel, perched on a cliff in the small southern village of Ponta do Sol, was once a large, beautiful and traditional quinta. Entirely renovated under the supervision of architect Tiago Oliveira, it’s now a perfect example of a hotel that combines modernity with minimalism, elegance and comfort.
The complex’s interior décor is the work of designer Carvalho Araújo, who opted for simplicity and sophistication. His idea was to create pleasant living spaces devoid of anything superfluous, in order to highlight the natural beauty of the site. Thus, in the 54 rooms, the walls are white, as are the curtains, the bedding, the armchairs and the lampshades. The totally functional furniture is in light colored wood, and each balcony possesses a very pleasant natural décor. All the rooms are bathed in natural light, creating a gentle and peaceful atmosphere in which guests can re-energize themselves.
The superb enchantingly turquoise outdoor infinity swimming pool promises long moments of relaxation, with eyes riveted on the seemingly endless ocean, or while snoozing under a parasol. The Estalagem da Ponta do Sol also possesses a spa where guests can tranquilly take advantage of the many treatments and massages available, as well as the sauna, steam baths and a panoramic Jacuzzi. Meals are served in the hotel’s restaurant which boasts a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean. The bar, with its lovely fireplace and covered terrace is an ideal spot to end the day among friends.
For the last several years, this hotel has been a partner of the International Festival of Digital Arts, “Madeiradig”, which meets every December on the island of Madeira. Since 2004, it has attracted a great many enthusiasts of new technology as well as personalities from the world of music and cinema. During this period, the hotel receives numerous artists in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
