Ideally located opposite the Mont Blanc massif, Megeve, means ”between two waters” in reference to its geographic position between the Arbon and the Arly. Its reputation began in the early 20th century when the Rothschild family decided to create a French equivalent of the Swiss ski resort Saint-Moritz. Megeve rapidly became one of the aristocracy’s privileged vacation spots. Its success has continued up to the present day. Although it’s famous throughout the world, Megeve has managed to maintain its identity by combining wealth, local heritage and modern comfort. The city also possesses some magnificent monuments like the Saint Jean-Baptiste Church whose oldest parts go back to the 13th century. The boutiques read like a who’s who of high fashion and luxurious jewelry. Megeve in winter is synonymous with high quality skiing and ice polo, and in summer with hiking, nature walks, cycling and climbing.
In the center of the city, a few steps from the church, Les Fermes de Marie - Marie’s Farms - is a perfect reflection of Megeve. This five-star hotel consists of nine chalets built with centuries old material from alpine pasture farms. Each room has its own particularity in the spirit of the Savoyard region. In the Classic, Club, Coin Salon and Prestige rooms, wood and warm colored fabrics create a very mountain type atmosphere. They all have slate and stone bathrooms and a small terrace with an incomparable view of the Mont Arbois and Rochebrune massifs. Antique objects and restored furniture lend an old world charm to the splendid Mont-Blanc suites.
After a day of skiing or a sleigh ride, the library is an invitation for guests to thumb through the different books available over a drink in a calm and filtered ambience. It’s also a perfect moment to discover the spa, the indoor swimming pool which opens onto the outside, the sauna or the fitness room.
And to begin the evening, the bar with its comfortable leather couches in sober tones is the ideal spot to get together before trying one of the four restaurants. Les Fermes de Marie proposes a gastronomic cuisine inspired by alpine traditions. The Dining Room offers a new look at the recipes of Maître Chiquart, the Chef of Amadeus VII, Count of Savoy. Finally, the hotel’s Hameau is a space dedicated to children and under the responsibility of a “kid concierge” who organizes activities according to the age of the children, thus giving parents in search of relaxation a breather.
An orally transmitted legend recounted by Megeve families attributes the city’s creation to two men: Muffat and Gosset who supposedly killed a flying snake that was preventing people from living here. The legend is part of Jean-Baptiste Berthet’s History of Megeve written in1791.
