The Courchevel winter resort was officially born in May, 1946 as a socially conscious vacation spot open to all layers of the population with the goal of encouraging tourism in the Savoie region by making the mountains available to everyone. This idea continued on until the late 1990s when the construction of more luxurious hotels, notably the Courchevel 1850 village became a popular vacation spot for Russian oligarchs. Although the three other villages that make up the resort remain family oriented, the image of Courchevel as a luxury site is now anchored in people’s minds.
