Megève which means « in the middle of the waters », a reference to its geographical location between the Arbon and Arly rivers, is ideally situated facing the Mont Blanc massif.
Created in 1912 by Baroness Noémie de Rothschild as a competitor to the Swiss ski resort of Saint-Moritz, Megéve quickly became one of the privileged sites for all the crowned heads of Europe.
Today, the village is a chic ski destination, where the world’s elite flock to as soon as the first snow begins to fall. The old farms have become elegant and authentic chalets, and the public wash houses, the numerous chapels and oratories stand side by side with high fashion boutiques and discreet, luxurious hotels.
At an altitude of 1,100 meters, just a few minutes’ walk from the center of Megève, the Alpaga possesses a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc. Built in the pure tradition of Megève farms, the 11 chalets making up this five star hamlet hotel with a full southern exposure, combine charm, elegance and authenticity with great panache. There is no excess of tradition here however. The architects of the hotel and its chalets have placed the accent on the mountain spirit but in a very sober manner.
Roofs in tiles known as ”pavilion”, warm fabrics, blankets of false fur, wool and flannel pillows and old fashioned eiderdowns represent the mountain décor, and engraved stone and granite add a the modern touch, creating pure contemporary rooms for modern day luxury seeking trappers.
Large bay windows in each room give one the feeling that Mont Blanc is just a stone’s throw away. Created as a little village or hamlet, the hotel has 11 totally different chalets. One of them is the reception area. Two others contain the hotel’s 22 rooms and the restaurant. 4 others are private chalets, and one is totally dedicated to children.
When the day’s skiing comes to an end, before having a drink around the fireplace in the wood, stone and cashmere decorated salon, it’s time to pay a visit to the chalet reserved totally for the soothing treatments of the spa. With its black stone walls, it’s a true haven of peace and quiet, a place to focus on one’s own well-being.
Afterwards, a few lengths in the swimming pool are in order before returning to your suite to get ready for dinner at the Alpaga’s restaurant where Chef Christophe Choufneker adds his own modern touches to Savoyard cuisine, with the accent on local products. A last drink in the bar-lounge, where the bartender employs all of his know-how and creativity to satisfy even the most demanding clients, is an ideal way to end the day.
The Alpaga operates like a private home. Guests have access to the garden, and children have sleighs available to them.
