Although it is known as a dry and desert like region the south of Rajasthan possesses one of India’s most beautiful nature reserves.
Located at the entrance to the city of Sawai Madhopur, the Ranthambore National Park was created in 1980. The site had been a reserve since 1973 following the creation of “Project Tiger“, designed to save the region’s emblematic animal from extinction, as the tiger population had decreased dramatically due to intensive poaching.
Ranthambore Park stretches over 370 square kilometers. It contains several bodies of water and a wide variety of landscapes including dense forests, savana, watering points and mountains. Animals prosper here thanks to an environment beneficial to several species.
In addition to the famous tiger (40 in number according to the most recent inventory), there are hyenas, bears, chital deer, wildcats, crocodiles and more than 250 bird species...making organized safaris here a very popular attraction. The increasing number of tourists and the number restrictions imposed on visitors by the park, make reserving one’s place in advance an imperative.
In addition to the incredible fauna here, the surrounding nature is breathtaking. It’s also possible to visit the 5th century Ranthambore Fort, one of the region’s oldest monuments with a spectacular view of the reserve.
The Oberoi Vanyavilas, adjacent to the reserve, is the perfect venue for taking full advantage of this exceptional natural site. In order to totally respect the environment, the Vanyavilas has only a small number of low stone buildings : the reception area, the restaurant and the reception halls. The rest of the hotel consists of 25 tents which offer guests an unforgettable vacation in the heart of omnipresent nature.
Surrounded by lush vegetation and water, the incredibly luxurious75 square meter tents are ideal for relaxation. Equipped with the latest high tech material for the guests’ comfort, the tents provide a unique refuge and the promise of powerful sensations.
The singing of the numerous and magnificent birds, or occasionally running into a family of monkeys, gives guests the impression of being in the heart of the reserve. Fortunately however, there is no danger of coming face to face with the star of Ranthambore, the famous tiger.
The hotel of course, proposes safaris leaving directly from the Oberoi. Barely a five minute drive separates the Vanyavilas from the reserve, where a 3 and a half hour excursion enables guests to discover and to meet unforgettable animal species. And since the tiger is not always present, several safaris are recommended, since each road and each itinerary on the reserve is different.
After a rugged safari, the hotel’s spa is the ideal spot for recuperating from the emotions of being in the wild! With the specific post-safari treatments offered, the spa is an oasis of well-being, located alongside a pond of water lilies.
The village of Sawai Madhopur is a picturesque and charming site where one can visit, among other attractions, a factory run by women who make carpets and traditional clothing, an employment which helps to improve their daily lives.
