Sri Lanka, an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the southwestern coast of India, was occupied by the Arabs followed by the Portuguese and then by the Dutch under whom it enjoyed its golden age in the 17^th century. In the following century, it was under British control and is still today a member of the Commonwealth. The country has conserved the traces and the influences of its former occupants. Buddhists for the most part for several centuries, Sri Lankans have two official languages: Tamil and Sinhala. The main cities are Colombo, the former capital which still plays an important role in the country’s economic life, Kandy and Galle. The latter, in the southwest of the country, is a great favorite with tourists.
