Sri Lanka, an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the southwestern coast of India, was occupied by the Arabs followed by the Portuguese and then by the Dutch under whom it enjoyed its golden age in the 17th century. In the following century, it was under British control and is still today a member of the Commonwealth. The country has conserved the traces and the influences of its former occupants. The traditional culture of tea for example, especially in the Ceylon region, is a reminder of the British Empire era. Buddhists for the most part for several centuries, Sri Lankans have two official languages: Tamil and Sinhala. The inhabitants are very hospitable and always ready to share their culture and traditions with visitors. The main cities are Colombo, the former capital which still plays an important role in the country’s economic life, Kandy and Galle. The latter, in the southwest of the country, is a great favorite with tourists. Highly regarded for its old city, which is fortified and whose ramparts are now covered with greenery, offering visitors a magnificent sight as well as pleasant walks along the sea.
Galle, in southwestern Sri Lanka, possesses the magnificent five-star hotel known as The Fortress Resort & Spa. Everything here has been done to respond to the demands of each and every guest, and with great success. Inspired by both its colonial past and 21st century modernity, The Fortress is a haven of peace on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
Its 49 rooms and suites all have terraces with a pleasant view of either the gardens or the sea. The comfort is unequalled with very large beds, some of them the work of well known designers, high tech equipment, a soft gentle atmosphere and a resolutely contemporary décor. Each room has a large bathroom with bathtub and shower. The suites have whirlpool bathtubs and private pools.
The beach, located at the foot of the hotel, and the superb infinity swimming pool overlooking the ocean are invitations to pleasant moments of relaxation, for individuals, couples or entire families. The state of the art fitness room and the soothing and refined atmosphere of the spa are also very popular with guests.
Gastronomy is also highlighted here with no less than two bars and three restaurants. The Heat, just a few meters from the beach, proposes an international cuisine and delicious home made ice cream, whereas the Pepper puts the accent on local traditions and the country’s richly spiced dishes. But it’s at the Wine 3, the hotel’s luxurious wine cellar that guests can enjoy a meal worthy of the finest gastronomic restaurants, in the unusual setting of being surrounded by thousands of vintage wines.
