The Turtle Bay region, a favorite holiday destination in the previous century for the well to do from Mauritius’ capital Port-Louis was, for a long time, preserved from the negative aspects of mass tourism, although it has just begun to interest real estate promoters. At first glance, the site doesn’t seem as if it would attract visitors in search of the fine sand beaches for which Mauritius is famous. The landscape consists primarily of rock with beaches almost non-existent, although there are some remains of infrastructures built under the leadership of the French governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais which are worth visiting. But that doesn’t take into account Turtle Bay whose charms seem to enchant visitors who venture here. Far from the bustle of the large centers in the north of the island and far from the crowds and indiscreet eyes, the silent, peaceful bay is in perfect harmony with the wild, unspoiled nature surrounding it.
Blue palm, ficus, banyan, blue latanier, paradise flowers and Gabon tulips are just a few of the plant species found on the ecological domain in which The Oberoi Mauritius Hotel is located. It consists of villas spread over 8 hectares of vegetation, facing the azure water of the lagoon. Under the watchful and expert eye of naturalist, Vikash, the hotel’s botanic garden reveals many secrets, colors and aromas. The senses are highlighted here, and every day brings its own discoveries. Guests can participate in sculpture classes, be initiated into the virtues of aromatherapy, learn how to observe the stars, or take a cooking lesson from the Italian Chef, Igor Bocchia, who is only too happy to share his passion. “My goal is to create a warm, family type gastronomic experience by awakening the palate to new tastes.” And as the flames light up the dark sky, the shores of Turtle Bay welcome guests to a dinner filled with Asian, Creole or European dishes, in a romantic setting designed to awaken the senses. The aroma of plants and vanilla prolong this sense-oriented experience at the Banyan Tree spa.
