New York, the tentacular, incredibly diverse and vertical city, is present in the imagination of everyone on the planet. Manhattan, New York’s economic, cultural and financial center, is also the most frequented by tourists. Famous for its immense skyscrapers and bustling hyperactivity, it contains a number of very different neighborhoods named after their present or original ethnic reality, like Chinatown or Little Italy.
In the very heart of Manhattan Island, Times Square is as emblematic of New York as the Champs Elysees is of Paris. The quarter owes its name to the New York Times, when the newspaper established its offices here. Teeming with theatres and restaurants until the Great Depression of 1929, it began to deteriorate and became an area of prostitution, drugs and corruption.
Thanks to Rudolph Giuliani, the New York’s mayor from 1994 to 2002, the quarter was reborn and became the “crossroads of the world” and it has remained so ever since. As a center of New York effervescence, with its huge and bright neon signs, its trendy restaurants, its Broadway theatres, the constant flow of yellow taxis and its “city that never sleeps” atmosphere, Times Square is a “must visit” part of the “The Big Apple.”
A sanctuary of well-being
The fact that there is no sign on the magnificently carved wooden door and that the building facade looks more like the front of a private residence, one doesn’t necessarily notice at first glance that the Sanctuary is a hotel. The atmosphere here is peaceful, making it a true sanctuary in the midst of hyperactive Manhattan. The photo of Buddha at the entrance sets the Zen like tone. Lovely alcoves in warm tones are enhanced by colorful vases. Inside, the reception area is surrounded by deep, comfortable leather sofas. The corridor is highlighted by stone statues of the same Buddha and crystal chandeliers, lead to a bar and a dining room with filtered lighting.
We find the same filtered and warm atmosphere in the rooms, which are decorated in warm shades of brown, chocolate and an intense orange. The masculine touch is represented by a design inspired by yachts and other luxury ships. The huge saddle style leather bed heads and floor tiles add a luxurious and deco chic aspectto the rooms. Large crystal chandeliers, made especially for the Sanctuary add a feminine touch to the elegant and sober design.
The Sanctuary has the privilege of possessing a rooftop terrace, which in addition to being ideal for relaxing as soon as the sun comes up, also has a restaurant, the Haven, which is quickly becoming a landmark in New York. The multi-purpose terrace is perfect for sunbathing with a cocktail in hand, or for an intimate relaxing dinner. And to prolong the evening, the bar at the other end of the lobby, animated by a dj, attracts a host of chic and trendy New Yorkers.
At the Sanctuary, the concierge service is totally personalized. Called STAR for Service to Any Request, it represents the Sanctuary’s desire to meet any and all the demands of its guests.
