Whether you’re a fan of the films of Pedro Almodovar, an aficionado of flamenco, someone who can’t resist tapas, or if you’re looking for a country with extremely varied landscapes in a warm, hospitable and often surprising atmosphere, Spain is definitely the place to go. For seekers of culture, Spain is also at the head of the list as a result of multiple invasions that have influenced its rich and often dramatic history. And all of these aspects of Spain can be enjoyed in total luxury! During the last decade, boutique hotels have become the order of the day here. In short, they have popped up everywhere, in big metropolises like Madrid and Barcelona as well as in smaller cities. These chic hotels with a limited number of rooms have become extremely popular with tourists. A relatively modest city like Tarifa is no exception to the rule. Tarifa, the southernmost city on the European continent, practically touching Africa, is a fortified city and a surfer’s paradise thanks to the winds from the Straits of Gibraltar. As the extreme point of the Andalusian region, it is an important tourist destination thanks also to its sunny climate. Located between Europe and Africa, it was an important entry point for the Arab invasions, making it a culturally fascinating site.
The Posada la Sacristia, in the heart of Tarifa’s historical quarter, is in the midst of a labyrinth of picturesque narrow streets. A 300-year old tavern was purchased by two designers, Bosco Herrero and Miguel Arregui and transformed into a 10-room boutique hotel whose key word is simplicity. There’s nothing fancy, no excessive decorations. The goal was simply to accent the originality and beauty of the original site, enhanced by a contemporary but sober décor. The blending of the different eras functions perfectly. By using ethnic, sometimes oriental inspired furniture, the owners have created a timeless, elegant and restful place to stay. Each room is arranged differently, and guests can come back several times to discover all of the Sacristia’s secrets. The “must” of the hotel is breakfast in the interior courtyard with its centuries old wells and its Andalusian arches. And for lovers of concept, the hotel has its on boutique, offering objects and clothing which match the spirit of the site. Staying at La Sacristia is also the occasion to take advantage of the region’s numerous activities, organized by the hotel such as journeys on horseback or mountain bike, mountain climbing, kite surfing, excursions to Morocco and even the possibility of observing whales!
The hotel kept the name of the 18th century tavern which was located on the property. The site was famous for its cuisine according to archives of the period.
