The island of Saint Barthélemy has always jealously defended its rich heritage. Its inhabitants have taken advantage of the island’s greatest treasure: its natural décor. All of Saint Barth, as it is familiarly called, has been classified as a protected nature reserve, and in addition to seeing the pelican, the island’s symbol, flying over, there are also green hummingbirds, great herons, and frigate birds. For deep sea diving enthusiasts, the marine depths are rich with a stunning variety of fish including puffer, parrot and angelfish. The architecture of the houses is totally adapted to the island and typical of the Caribbean, built with wood and with pastel colored roofs. The huge villas frequented by the jet set are discreet and hidden away, and the sumptuous hotels are in no way conspicuously ostentatious. Saint Barth is an island which attracts visitors for its authenticity.
In the heart of the Cayes anse, in the North of Saint Barthélemy, the Manapany Cottage & Spa covers 400 meters of natural beach. General Manager Federico Roy has breathed life into this hotel which combines luxury and refinement, making it one of the most important hotels on the island. Frequented by numerous residents and well-known personalities, it is also known as an ideal spot for surfing. Every Sunday, around the swimming pool, the hotel offers a brunch open to local inhabitants.
The Manapany has 46 rooms and suites of which 32 are cottages spread throughout a tropical garden flanked by a hill looking down onto the white sand beach below. The furniture is in the colonial style. All the rooms have either double or twin beds with a mosquito net and an air circulator. They have a view either of the sea or the lush vegetation surrounding the hotel. Some of the suites are on the top of the hill with an uninterrupted view of the horizon from the terraces. Others are near the beach, with the same careful and elegant décor and the addition of a Jacuzzi on the terrace.
The Fellini restaurant owes its name and many of its dishes to the Italian origins of the owners. Pasta is the house specialty, either in its original version or blended with Caribbean flavors. Other specialties include butterfly shrimp in diablotin sauce and lobster ravioli. The proximity to the beach offers a number of possibilities ranging from lolling and tanning on the beach to water sports and deep sea diving. The hotel has the latest fitness equipment and tennis courts with an astounding view. After a day at the beach, the Payot Spa, facing the sea, invites guests to enjoy its serenity. The combination of wood and marble for the décor, patchouli, vanilla, bergamot and mint for the essential oils, baths, showers, hot stones are all designed to provide total relaxation. The massage techniques available are varied and can be accompanied by Pilates sessions or gymnastic exercise.
Gustavia, capital of Saint Barthélemy, owes its name to the former king of Sweden, Gustave III. Some of the colorful street names such as Droninggaton and Kongsgatan go back to that period.
