In addition to being a picturesque and authentic Provencal village, Saint-Paul de Vence, located on a rocky spur overlooking the countryside, is an important site for contemporary art.
In fact, one would be wrong to think of it as merely a nice place to enjoy a cocktail in the shade of the plane trees or to play a game of petanque. The Auberge de la Colombe d’Or and the Fondation Maeghtare two iconic venues closely linked to Chagall, Picasso, Prévert, Cocteau and Braque.
In addition to immersing oneself in the typical flavor of the Provence region, a visit to the village reveals the presence of excellent artists at work, undoubtedly inspired by the imposing fortifications built by Francis the First between 1544 and 1557. Saint-Paul de Vence was one of France’s first fortified cities.
Strolling through the passages and tiny narrow streets of this city with its authentic charm is a delight for visitors. Not only are the illustrious ghosts of the past here, but the present reveals a warm and hospitable welcome by the inhabitants fortunate enough to live in this unique village.
The Mas de Pierre, about ten minutes away on the village road, has made Provencal peace and charm a veritable way of life, while cultivating a passion for contemporary art.
The Mas de Pierre was named after the founders of this historic inn run by Pierre and Marie, a couple living on the road to Saint-Paul de Vence who decided to create an inn for coach travellers. Today, it’s a charming hotel with the typical colors and atmosphere of the Provence region. As soon as they arrive, guests are immersed in a country like ambiance. The lanes leading to the reception building are bordered with centuries old olive trees, and it’s there that the first imposing statues are visible, giving the hotel an undeniable and unique flavor.
The Mas de Pierre’s 48 rooms and suites are spread over 5 buildings in four hectares of garden and nature. The visitor finds himself in the heart of a calm and rich landscape shaped by capable hands, but in a preserved and totally natural environment.
Art plays a major role here and is an integral part of the mas and its identity. There are several statues by renowned artists including César, Folon, Decoster and Sosno. Far from being artificial, the presence of art pays tribute in part to the village of Saint-Paul de Vence, but more essentially it creates a monumental and intimate landscape which brings out the colors of the countryside. Like two worlds perpetuating a silent dialogue, the metallic side of the works enters into contact with the natural elements, creating a harmony of sound and color. The rooms once again highlight regional tones, and the authentic furniture comes from second antique dealers in the area.
The wood parquet floors and the very carefully selected details make it a pleasure to stay here and contemplate the uninterrupted view of the mas and the Provencal countryside.
There is harmony as well in the cuisine, which the chef creates using fresh and typically regional products, paying tribute to Provencal ingredients. He is helped a great deal by the hotel’s vegetable garden where herbs and spices grow like works of art. The Mas de Pierre and its aesthetic options are definitely designed for guests to stand up and take notice.
The exotic garden, a magical site on a property filled with poetry, can be discovered alone or in romantic company. In the shade of an antique greenhouse, guests can enjoy reading in peace under the curious eyes and of chirping birds. Add to this a wide variety of orchids, and you have a truly secret and enchanting site.
