Buzios

Buzios, 160 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro, is theSaint-Tropezof the Cariocas, as inhabitants of Rio are called. Revealed to the world in the 1960s, when the siren of St. Tropez, Brigitte Bardot was welcomed here. The village was a simple little port for Indian and Portuguese fishermen until the early 20^th century. Today, it is a privileged vacation destination for the international jet set and consists of 50 nationalities among its 24,560 Inhabitants.

In spite of its annual summer tourist invasion, the village has preserved its original charm. Old houses with clay tile roofs and rustic wood facades stand side by side with prestigious fashion boutiques, famous restaurants and trendy night spots.

The beauty of the peninsula’s beaches, the crystalline ocean water and the lush nature surrounding it, a vestige of the Atlantic Forest, combined with the charm of an old authentic fishing village make Buzios, a chic and trendy beach resort well worth discovering.

A journey to the heart of Brazilian culture

Overlooking Ferradura, one of Buzios’ most beautiful beaches, the Insolito boutique hotel blends in gracefully with the nature around it. Entirely designed by the owner, Emmanuelle Meeus de Clermont-Tonnere, the hotel is a tribute to Brazilian culture and its environment.

In this building, designed by Otavio Raja Gabaglia and Luiz Fernando Grabowksy, with its vivid red facade, Brazilian design objects, works of art and furniture by Brazilian artists are on display in the common areas as well as the rooms, like this Pigmento Ovo table and the wonderful rustic wood sofas by Elma Chavez.

Emmanuelle Meeus de Clermont-Tonnerre’s love of Brazil encouraged her to protect it by opting for ecological design furniture including sofas made with rustic wood, Ecolog armchairs made of recycled wood, and rubber carpeting recycled and created by Brazilian designers. This tribute to Brazil continues in the rooms, each of which possesses a very special atmosphere.

The Casa Cultura Negra for example, highlights Afro-Brazilian culture, namely the Candomblé. It is decorated with a bench in wood shavings designed by Erick Figueira de Mello and night tables created from a Dutch design, by an economically underprivileged Brazilian community.

The Pau Brasil pays tribute to the wealth of Brazilian wood, with a panel by Velha Bahia. We find the famous Portuguese “azulejos”, traditional earthenware tiles, painted in blue in the Outeiro da Gloria. The Oca possesses embroidered native headdresses on the cushions and naïve art works in the suite of the same name. Dedicated to Brazil’s lush nature, the Boboleta Buzios is a veritable natural reserve for butterflies.

The suites are dedicated to Brazilian literature, photography and opera. All the suites have photographs by ethnologist, Claudia Andujar and stickers by André Diniz and the young Brazilian designer, Juliana Llussa.

Two swimming pools, a fresh water and a salt water pool, a spa thatdispenses treatments based on Indian rituals, and a restaurant built like a hanging garden above the sea complete this cultural and environmental tribute to Brazil, and at the same time, make this chic and design boutique hotel truly unique in the world.
