Located in the heart of the Alps, in the Mont-Blanc region, Megève, along with Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Combloux, La Giettaz, Cordon and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, forms a skiable domain with 450 kilometers of slopes and trails. Created in 1912 by the Baroness de Rothschild to compete with the Saint-Mortiz ski resort in Switzerland, Megève has become a chic ski station for the world’s rich and famous, while managing to conserve its mountain village charm. Narrow, winding streets take strollers to the Grand Place and the St. Jean-Baptiste church with its stunning bulb like bell. Small plazas decorated with fountains, wash houses, numerous chapels and oratories stand side by side with high fashion boutiques and discreetly luxurious hotels. Visitors come here in winter for the ski slopes and trails, as well as for ice polo, and in summer for hiking, bicycling, paragliding or climbing…or simply to enjoy the view of mountains like Mont Joly, Jaillet and Arbois.
Built with logs, the Lodge Park has the aura of a trapper’s cabin. Ideally located in the heart of Megève, the hotel has an authentic and unique atmosphere. The creation of Jocelyne and Jean-Louis Sibuet, it has the feel of a travel album that one likes to leaf through, hopping from one section to another. Jocelyne Sibuet in fact, searched throughout the world, and found objects for each space in the hotel. Cowhide ottomans, furniture made with deer antlers, gazelle horn chandeliers, low tables made of sequoia or poplar trunks, birch wood armchairs, hunting and fishing trophies on the walls and the omnipresence of wood recreate the trapper lodge spirit of the hotel.
In the 49 rooms and suites, the same spirit prevails. The old and the rustic blend together with contemporary materials like the crocodile style pvc found on some of the walls, next to a more classical Scottish plaid. Fur on the beds, glass and wooden night tables and, the luxury of luxuries, a natural stone fireplace in each room which reinforces the warm feel of the wood, all add to the rustic but luxurious atmosphere. Each room has a different ambience. Most of them have either a terrace or a balcony with a breathtaking view of the surrounding park. They all possess objects, details and large photographs demonstrating the simple subtlety and magic of the mountains. The Plenitude Suite represents the height of luxury, with a magnificent view of the Mont d’Arbois massif.
In the living room, the torrent stone and birch log fireplace and the brown leather Chesterfield couches are an invitation to relaxation after a long day of skiing. Guests however, might opt to visit the heated terrace of the outdoor bar and contemplate the stars. In the restaurant, imposing tree trunks blend in with lizard or crocodile covered sofas. The menu consists of a subtle combination of international and local cuisine. Finally, the Pure Altitude spa with its four cabins of stone, wood, fire and water also reflect the spirit of the mountains.
The “Glaçon de Megève” is a subtle blend of praline with a thin layer of meringue. It was invented by Bartolomeo Vigliengo, an Italian who came to France at the end of the 19th century and fell in love with a local Savoyard woman. He created his famous “glaçon” to celebrate the birth of their first child.
