Spain’s attraction is magnetic. It’s a dream destination, no more and no less! Taking advantage of an economic boom after the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship, the Iberian Peninsula was transformed into an Eldorado for fiesta lovers as well as a Mecca of European culture. The La Movida movement originated in Madrid with its multitude of colors, pop culture, and originality, of which the films of Pedro Almodovar are a prime example. Barcelona however, has become the “in” city thanks to its energy, exuberance and constantly developing culture. What’s interesting about Spain is that all the clichés are true and Barcelona is no exception. Rare are the European countries that can boast about their incredible vitality. Like the works of the architect, Gaudi, which have come to symbolize Barcelona the city that has always dared to take chances. Still very much at ease in its blend of the contemporary and the traditional, the Catalonian capital seems to ignore time and convention and march towards the future to the tune of its own drummer. Luxury hotels in Barcelona are therefore heterogeneous, multi-colored and experimental. Design hotels are extremely numerous and very daring when it comes to offering attractive and comfortable concepts.
Opened in 2002, like many others, the Hotel OMM is a luxury design boutique hotel which quickly made its mark for its highly controlled, discreet refinement. Located on the fashion and shopping avenue, the Passeig de Gracia, one of the best spots in the city, the hotel benefits from its upscale surroundings, guaranteeing pleasure and discovery in the best possible atmosphere. The OMM’s mineral like façade is very impressive, and certain parts of it seem to be detached like the pages of a book. The design aspect however, is totally devoted to functionality. The extensions placed in front of the windows are designed to capture the light of day and transform the rooms into havens of peace and light, the latter being treated as a material. Shaped by the light, the rooms have a calming influence with bathrooms that have been built as extensions of the living space. The calm atmosphere begins in the lobby. There’s nothing superfluous here. There are no boutiques or even a counter. The space has been carefully thought out with the goal of introducing the guest to a world of sensual delight. The corridors leading to the rooms are even more minimalist in that they are black with neon lighting, thus reinforcing the effect of the rooms once the guest discovers them.
The Moo, the hotel’s restaurant, has been awarded a star by the prestigious Michelin Guide, and like other hotels in Barcelona, the Omm has a swimming pool on its terrace with a view of the neighborhood.
