The 18 cottages of the Compass Point Beach Resort hotel on the island of New Providence, adds color to the banks of Love Beach. Sprung from the imagination of the celebrated creator of British fashion, Barbara Hulanicki, the daring art deco style of this boutique hotel plunges visitors into a vivid multi-colored universe, with facades in yellow, turquoise and fuchsia. The artistic culture of the Bahamas is highlighted here, as well as the good humor and “joie de vivre” of its inhabitants. The comfort oriented sober, minimalist, elegant, almost transparent interiors cast a veil of simplicity over this electrifying resort. Just a few steps from the center of Nassau, the hotel is an ideal starting point for discovering the capital of the Bahamas and its magnificent stretches of beach.

New Providence Island

The small island of New Providence sums up the entire Bahamas archipelago perfectly in that it combines tropical exoticism, colonial charm and a dash of business acumen. Although New Providence is not the largest island in the Bahamas, it nevertheless contains more than 60 percent of the population. It’s the main economic center of the archipelago and the seat of the capital, Nassau. No one would have ever guessed that this former pirate hideaway would become a glamorous and cosmopolitan destination. The 1970s marked a turning point in the island’s history. The archipelago gained its independent from the British Commonwealth in 1973 and opened up to mass tourism ushering in a new era of growth and prosperity. Numerous hotel complexes invested in the seafront areas, building hotels all along the superb sandy white beaches, which still today give the island its reputation. These include Love Beach, Cabbage Beach, Caves Beach and Cable Beach.

Eighteen cottages in the heart of nature

Shortly after leaving Nassau Airport, tourists can discover an establishment rich in color and in surprises. A few minutes ride, and the blue Atlantic Ocean waters appear. The road continues on the edge of Love Beach, where we find the eighteen cottages of Compass Point Beach Resort, created by the renowned British fashion designer Barbara Hulanicki using a bouquet of vivid striking colors. The exterior design is a direct reference to the celebrated Junkanoo, a spectacular night time parade featuring musicians and dancers in eccentric, vibrantly colored costumes who animate the festivities to the rhythm of drums, bells, whistles and horns which echo throughout the island. Although the thousands of costumes decorated with pearls, sequins and multi-colored fabrics illuminate the streets of the capital every year, the colored facades of Compass Point embellish the sea front in art deco style.

The more sober interiors place the accent on comfort and simplicity with natural wood floors, white walls and neutral furniture creating an atmosphere of serenity designed for rest and relaxation.

Compass Point has a recording studio and occasionally welcomes celebrities from the music world such as Lenny Kravitz. Lauryn Hill recorded her first album here. Other artists include the Rolling Stones and Rihanna.
