Lying majestically on the banks of the Seine, Paris is a prestigious and legendary city. With its 180 museums and countless monuments, the city is an artistic and cultural jewel unequalled in the world. Palaces, churches, cathedrals, triumphal arches are but a few of its incredible number of monuments, the most famous of which include, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Arch of Triumph and Sacré Coeur to mention but a few. And yet, it’s by strolling along its “quais“, its lively streets and in the secret sites of its numerous districts or “arrondissements” that we discover the living city, the birthplace of French elegance and tradition.
Thanks to its rich two thousand year old history, each of the city’s arrondissements has its own treasures. With the Tuileries Gardens, the Louvre, the Place Vendôme, rue Saint-Honoré, the Ile de la Cité and Palais Royal, the first arrondissement is the ideal quarter for luxury shoppers and art lovers. It’s not by chance that luxury hotels like the Meurice or the Plaza Athenée are located here and that the Mandarin Oriental chose the rue Saint-Honoré, dedicated to high fashion and luxury, as the site for its first hotel in France.
Located in a historic 1930s building, this eight story palace hotel, opened in 2011. Architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte was in charge of the project and transformed the building into an Art deco inspired contemporary palace and a veritable showcase of French design and high fashion. It was he who had the idea of creating an immense landscaped garden, at the end of which we find a magnificent green cascade consisting of long metallic garden structures.
The interiors are the work of three renowned designers. Sybille de Margerie was in charge of the room decorations, the spa and the lobby, and Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, the bar and the restaurants.
In the halls encrusted with Swarovski crystals, an impressive statue by Nathalie Decoster stands under the gold leaf ceiling. Two themes are present in the hotel’s 99 rooms and 39 suites. The first is a resolutely Parisian style, inspired by Art deco and a very fashion oriented spirit with crystal, lacquer and gold leaf in harmony with precious fabrics like taffeta, silk and velvet in warm tones. The second principle employed is the creation of a refined contemporary style, which combines occidental and oriental design elements. The Oriental suite is a perfect example, with lacquered wood and ebony alongside marble and floral colors. All the rooms have elegant furniture and contemporary works of art by Ali Madhavi, Thierry Bisch and Nathalie Decoster.
Wherever one looks, there’s an impression of luxury and romance tinted with the exoticism typical of all Mandarin Oriental hotels. The immense and spectacular J’aime Paris Penthouse, which groups together the extraordinary Royal Mandarin, Premier Atelier and Broderie de Cristal suites, have two terraces with a panoramic view of the rooftops of Paris, the Opera Garnier and the Eiffel Tower.
At the Bar 8 and the 2 restaurants, the designers created a decor destined to enhance the incredible cuisine proposed by the Michelin starred Chef, Thierry Marx. The Sur Mesure white fabric ceilings and wall drapery, wood, stone and curved armchairs of the Camelia are the ideal ambiance for enjoying modern dishes that appeal to the eye, the ear and of course our sense of taste.
Finally, we come to the highlight of all Mandarin Oriental hotels, the spa. The Parisian version is truly exceptional. Its immense 1,200 square meter 2 floors space is a veritable island of well being in a magnificent high fashion decor.
At the Mandarin Oriental Paris, Parisian elegance combines with Oriental refinement to create luxury, comfort and a contemporary spirit.
With motion detectors in each room, the hotel demonstrates its priority of conserving energy. It’s the first French hotel to receive High Environmental Quality certification for its construction.
